Although the time of flexible magnetic media has passed irrevocably, sometimes it may be necessary to read or write information to this medium. If your computer does not have a floppy disk drive installed, you will need to install one.
Necessary
- - computer;
- - FD drive (disk drive for reading magnetic disks);
- - Phillips screwdriver;
- - a ribbon cable connecting the drive to the motherboard.
Instructions
Step 1
Open the case cover of the system unit of your computer.
Step 2
Prepare the site for the FD drive. If necessary, remove the plastic cap to the front panel, carefully break off the aluminum "curtain" in the same place from which the cap was removed.
Step 3
Mount the FD drive in the appropriate place in the system unit. As a rule, the drive should slide into the niche on the slide. The front of the FD-drive should merge with the front panel of the system unit and not be sunk inward or protrude from the front.
Step 4
Using bolts or special latches, fasten the drive to the case of the system unit.
Step 5
Connect the FD-drive to the power supply of the system unit. To do this, find the four-core wire from the power supply. It is impossible to confuse this wire with another, the FD-drive has a special, unique power connection interface.
Step 6
Connect the daisy chain first to the FD drive and then to the connector on the motherboard. Unlike connecting an interface cable to a hard disk or DVD / CD drive, a ribbon cable for a magnetic disk read / write drive may not contain a plug or guide. Before connecting the drive, make sure which side to connect this cable to the motherboard and the drive.
Step 7
Go to the initial settings of the motherboard (BIOS) and make sure that the use of FDD is allowed and enabled. If this is not the case, make the appropriate changes to the configuration.
Step 8
Boot the operating system and make sure the FD drive is installed and ready to use.
Step 9
If you connect a USB floppy disk, you just need to plug the USB-cable of the FD-drive into the corresponding connector, wait for the operating system to install the drive, or install the drivers on the device yourself.
