Modern operating systems are usually installed with entire databases made up of drivers for a wide variety of devices. Therefore, in most cases, to connect a new "hardware" to an existing system, it is enough to connect a new device to the desired connector, and the rest will be done by the system components of the OS. But if this does not happen, the computer user will have to go through the procedure for installing the necessary driver on his own.

Instructions

Step 1

Prepare the files required to install the driver. If the modem was purchased in a store, it must include an optical disc with software, which must include a driver. If such a disk is not at your disposal, download the installation package of files from the device manufacturer's website. On such web resources, drivers are placed in sections titled "Support", "Download" or "Software", but you can also use the site search engine.

Step 2

If the driver is on an optical disc, simply install it in the reader and wait for a prompt asking if the system should allow the autorun file to run. Answer the question in the affirmative, and the disc menu will appear on the screen, in which you need to select the driver installation item. After that, all that remains is to follow the instructions that appear on the screen.

Step 3

The executable file downloaded from the Internet must be launched by double-clicking, after which, as in the previous step, the installation wizard will start. If a whole archive of files has been downloaded from the manufacturer's website, after unpacking it, find an object with the exe extension and the name setup or install - this is what you need to run to start the installation process.

Step 4

If there is no executable file, and instead there are only files with inf extensions, use the system application of the operating system - "Device Manager" for installation. To call it in Windows 7 and Vista, press the Win key, type "modem", and then select the link "Update device drivers" or "Device Manager" in the search results - both open the same window of the system application.

Step 5

Find the "Modem" section in the list, expand it by clicking on the triangle to the left of the inscription and right-click on the line with the device name. In the context menu, select the item "Update drivers", and in the additional window that appears, click on the words "Search for drivers on this computer".

Step 6

In the next window of the form, click the "Browse" button and select the folder where the inf files are stored. Press the "Next" button to start the process - the program should itself select from a set of information files the one that belongs to the OS version installed on the computer. It uses the default modem driver, changing its settings according to the information in the file.
