The main disadvantage of mkv files is their large size. This often interferes with more than normal movie viewing with a portable player. Some mkv files can't even burn to DVD media.

Instructions
Step 1
If you don't want to change the quality of the video, just remove the extra elements from the mkv container. Download MKVmerge GUI program. It allows you to perform all the necessary operations with files of the described format. Install the program and restart your computer.
Step 2
Launch the MKVmerge GUI utility and open the File menu. Select Open and specify the path to the required mkv file. Wait for the information about the contents of the container to load. Open the Input tab and examine the contents of the Tracks menu.
Step 3
Uncheck the items you don't need. These can be subtitles or additional audio tracks. Often mkv containers contain 3-4 audio files. If you do not want to overwrite the original file, then click the Browse button located in the Output Filename menu. Select a folder to save the file and enter its name. Click the Start Mixing button and wait while the program creates a new mkv file with the specified parameters.
Step 4
If you want to significantly reduce the size of the mkv file, then use Total Video Converter. Run it and open the New Project menu. Select "Import" and select the required mkv container.
Step 5
In the menu that appears, move the slider to "Low quality". Select the target file type mkv. Wait for the main menu to open. Make sure the working file is ticked. Click the "Convert Now" button and wait while the new file is created.
Step 6
It is important to understand that the second method will severely degrade video quality. Sometimes it makes more sense to choose a different format with the High Quality option. This will reduce the footprint while maintaining the image parameters.
