Quite often, Microsoft Excel users ask why a file with a small table sometimes takes about 5-10 MB. It is no coincidence that many formulas over time make the file "heavy", which can be difficult to reduce.

The very first and most important reason for a large table is its shared accessibility. What does it mean? For example, computers in an office are united by one network, there is a table that is used by all users of this network. The program itself assigns several users to the file and it records information about when and by whom the document was changed. It is not hard to imagine that when the number of users exceeds 2-3 people, the file size becomes huge.

For versions of MS Excel 2003 and older, you must click the top menu "Service" and select the item "Access to the book". For versions of the program 2007 and younger, in the main window of the program go to the "Review" tab and select "Access to the book". In the window that opens, in both cases, go to the "Details" tab.

Check the box next to "Do not store change log" and save the open table. Now you need to set the number of days for which the log will be kept. Opposite this parameter, you will see the number 30, but you can do much less.
Step 4
You can then delete rows and columns that you are not using. How to find out? Navigate to the table and press Ctrl + End. The cursor in the document will automatically move to the last cell in your table. See if there are rows and columns that you do not use above and to the right of this cell. If so, select them and delete them, thereby reducing the total number of cells.
Step 5
It is also recommended to get rid of cell formatting that you rarely use. It is better to replace the white color markers in a transparent cell with the "No fill" option. To turn off the formatting of cells offline, select them, then click the top menu "Edit", select the item "Clear", the command "Format" (Excel 2003) or open the tab "Home", select the block "Clear", the command "Clear formats".
