Reducing file sizes is especially important if the file needs to be sent by e-mail or published on the Internet. You can compress almost any file, but the file type also depends on how it resizes.
Instructions
Step 1
It is convenient to compress large text documents several megabytes in size using archiving programs. Archivators are different, but WinRar has been and remains the most popular of them. Working with WinRar is extremely easy. After installation, some program commands become available from the context menu of the operating system, so in order to compress a text file, you just need to right-click on its icon. In the context menu that appears, select the "Add to archive" command. After a few seconds, an archive will appear in the same folder, which, as a rule, has several times less volume than the original file.
Step 2
Images and photographs can also be compressed, but using an archiver to compress a photograph is almost useless. Compression of a photo can be done in a graphics editor. To do this, open the file using Photoshop (GIMP, or another graphics editor) and select "Resize" from the menu. With this tool, you can resize any photo, for example, make a two-megapixel photo out of a five-megapixel photo. A lower resolution image means a smaller file size. Also, when saving a file, you can slightly lower its quality (visually it will be almost imperceptible), which will also affect the size of the resulting file.
Step 3
Resizing audio and video files is done by converting them to another format, or by compressing the original file in an existing format. To do this, open the file in the appropriate editor and save it with a lower bit rate, or save it as a file in a different format. For example,.avi files are much larger than.mpeg files, and.mp3 files take up much less space than.ogg files.
