Computer malfunction is a common problem faced by any user, and it can have a wide variety of reasons. One of the reasons for Windows malfunctions and the inability to start the operating system normally is damage to the system registry. There are several ways you can try to restore your system to working condition to save the data on your computer before reinstalling Windows.
Instructions
Step 1
The easiest way is to try to restore Windows through a backup, if it was created by a special program. If the backup does not exist, you will have to use the System Restore Console. Insert the Windows XP boot disk into the drive and configure the computer to start from the CD.
Step 2
When the System Installation Wizard opens, press the R key to open the Recovery Console. Enter the password for the administrator account or press Enter if you did not set a password on your computer. In the command line that appears, enter several commands in a row, pressing the enter button after each command:
md tmp
copy c: / windows / system32 / config / system c: /windows/tmp/system.bak
copy c: / windows / system32 / config / software c: windows / tmp / software.bak
copy c: / windows / system32 / config / sam c: /windows/tmp/sam.bak
copy c: / windows / system32 / config / security c: /windows/tmp/security.bak
copy c: / windows / system32 / config / default c: /windows/tmp/default.bak
delete c: / windows / system32 / config / system
delete c: / windows / system32 / config / software
delete c: / windows / system32 / config / sam
delete c: / windowssystem32 / config / security
delete c: / windows / system32 / config / default
copy c: / windows / repair / system c: / windows / system32 / config / system
copy c: / windows / repair / software c: / windows / system32 / config / software
copy c: / windows / repair / sam c: / windows / system32 / config / sam
copy c: / windows / repair / security c: / windows / system32 / config / security
copy c: / windows / repair / default c: / windows / system32 / config / default
Step 3
After all the commands have been entered, type Exit to exit the console. After that, you must be logged in with an administrator account. Open File Explorer and select Folder Options from the Tools menu.
Step 4
On the "View" tab, uncheck the "Hide protected system files" option and check the "Show hidden files and folders" option. Then click on the hard drive where the operating system is installed and open the System Volume Information folder.
Step 5
Open the newest folder inside the given folder. Inside the new folder, select the Snapshot folder. Copy the files from this folder to C: / Windows / Tmp. Rename the backed up registry files.
Step 6
Now delete the existing registry files and place the new files in the C: / Windows / System32 / Config folder. In the installation console, confirm the copying of these files. Now, when you restart the system, select the "Restore an early computer state" option.
