Protection of personal information stored on a computer must be ensured as efficiently as possible. To prevent unwanted connections to a PC, both standard operating system tools and additional applications are used.

Step 1
Start by configuring Windows Firewall. Connect a network cable to your computer and wait for a new connection to be defined. For Windows Vista and Seven, a new menu will appear prompting you to select your network type.
Step 2
Indicate the item "Public network". This will activate the maximum level of protection when working with local resources. Now open the System and Security menu. The link to it is in the control panel.
Step 3
Open Windows Firewall. Click the Use Recommended Settings button to activate and quickly configure this service. Close the working window.
Step 4
Left-click on the network connection icon displayed in the system tray. Click on the "Network and Sharing Center" link.
Step 5
In the left column, find the item "Change advanced sharing options" and open it. Expand the options for the network that has the name "Current Profile" in its name.
Step 6
Activate the "Disable network discovery" option. Likewise, disable sharing of folders, files, and peripherals. Scroll down the page and check the box next to "Enable password protected sharing."
Step 7
Click the "Save Changes" button. Restart your computer for the new network rules to take effect.
Step 8
Install the firewall software. For these purposes, free applications, such as Comodo Firewall, are suitable. Run the program and open the settings menu.
Step 9
Create a new rule for incoming connections. Set the range of IP addresses that are assigned to computers on your local network. Activate the "Block connection" function. It is worth noting that if the network consists of 2-5 computers, it is wiser to manually enter each IP address.
