To improve the reliability of the system and to preserve important files in the event of an operating system or hard disk failure, it is recommended to create RAID arrays. This process can be carried out in several ways.
Necessary
- - hard disks;
- - RAID controller.
Instructions
Step 1
There are three main types of RAID arrays. Choose the one that suits you best. Consider a very important nuance: to create different types of RAID arrays, a different number of hard drives are required.
Step 2
If your goal is to increase the performance of the operating system, then create an array of RAID 0 (Stripping). Pay attention to the following nuance: for a significant increase in computer performance, you need to connect hard drives to various IDE ports, and not use RAID controllers.
Step 3
If your main goal of creating a RAID array is to preserve data in the event of a disk failure, then create a RAID 1 (Mirroring) array. In this case, one hard disk group will be a mirror of another. Those. all data will be written to each group. In this case, you can use RAID controllers, because the creation of such an array has practically no effect on system performance.
Step 4
The highest quality type of RAID array is RAID 10 (0 + 1). It combines the functions of both of the above types. The disadvantage of this type is the fact that it requires at least four hard drives to create it. If you have the required number of hard drives, then create a RAID 10 array.
Step 5
Connect hard drives to RAID controllers or free IDE slots on the motherboard. Turn on your computer and press the Del key. After entering the BIOS menu, open the Boot Device item. In the Device Settings field, select the type of operation with RAID disks from the offered options.
Step 6
Save your changes. Reboot your computer. When the PC starts booting, a message will appear in which the key will be indicated, after pressing which the menu for setting the RAID array will open. Press the required key.
Step 7
Select the type of RAID array. Specify the purpose of each hard drive in the array. Save your settings and restart your computer.
