Each text document has its own specific encoding. If the original encoding of the file has been changed, then in some cases, when you open it, instead of the usual letters, a set of incomprehensible characters may appear. Or, the document may mix, for example, Latin characters and Cyrillic. Of course, in either case it will be impossible to work with him. Then, so that the document can be read again, you need to return its original encoding.

  • - Computer;
  • - the Stirlitz program;
  • - Recovery Toolbox for Word.

Instructions

Step 1

To decode the file, you will need the free Stirlitz program. It can be easily found and downloaded from the Internet. After downloading the program, unpack the archive (does not require installation). Just run it from the folder where you extracted the archive.

Step 2

In the main menu of the program, click on the "File" component. After that, select "Open" in the menu that appears. Provide the path to the text file you want to decode. Then go to the "Edit" tab and select "Decode". The process of decoding the file to its original format will begin. Wait for it to complete.

Step 3

After the decoding process is complete, select the "File" component. This time, in the menu that appears, click on the "Save As" command. Next, in the window that opens, select the name of the file and the folder where it will be saved. The text document can now be read with a test editor.

Step 4

Another option is to use a program that repairs files if they are damaged in the source code. It is called Recovery Toolbox for Word. Although the program is commercial, you can find a free trivial version. Download the application from the Internet and install it on your computer. Start it up. In the main menu, click on the image of the folder and specify the path to the text file. Click on it with the left mouse button, then from the bottom of the window, click on the "Open" command.

Step 5

Now, at the bottom of the window, click on the "Analysis" command, and in the dialog box that appears, click "Yes". Wait for the document verification process to complete. Once completed, you can start the restore operation. To do this, click on the "Start recovery" command. Then select the "Export to Word" option and wait for the recovery process to complete. Upon completion of this operation, the text file will be restored. Close the program by clicking on the "Finish" command.
