For a long time, for most of us, the computer has become not just a gadget, but a full-fledged assistant in work. The computer from time to time requires changes in the technical characteristics, that is, its modernization. For example, you may need to connect a second drive. How can this be done?

Necessary

Two drives, a ribbon cable, power cables for drives, screws, screwdrivers

Instructions

Step 1

First of all, think about whether you need two drives connected at the same time? Very often a person buys a new modern drive and put it second, because it is a pity to throw out the old one. Of course, you can leave the old drive in the system, but you should think about the expediency of its operation. If the new drive is multifunctional, and the old one can perform one or two operations, then leaving it is impractical, since the old drive will be idle most of the time, but it will consume energy and computer resources, that is, create an extra load on the system.

Step 2

Disconnect all wires from the system. Be sure to de-energize it to avoid electric shock. Remove the cover of the system unit to gain access to the insides. If you are disassembling a computer with your own hands for the first time, then carefully study the instruction manual. There you will find ways to secure your computer case parts. Also see the instructions for building your computer. In it you will find the location and connection of all wires and loops.

Step 3

Now you need to decide on the location of the new and old drives. Typically, a computer has up to four drive bays. Place the drive in a convenient order for you. Adjust the position so that the open button is pressed firmly. Then secure the drives with four screws. Find the ribbon cable that connects the motherboard and floppy drive. It has 34 veins and always starts with a red wire. Now you need to properly connect the drives with it. Remember that there must be crossover wires between the connected drives. Then one of the drives will be identified as primary, and the other as secondary. Also connect the power wires to both drives. Remember that your PSU must be able to handle both drives, if it is weak, you will have to buy a new, more powerful one. Assemble the computer and turn it on.
