In order to play videos on a computer, one player is not enough. Codecs are also required to play video files correctly. But there are situations when it is necessary to disable the operation of certain codecs. For example, in video games, some video screensavers may not display correctly. In such cases, notifications may appear that a certain codec must be removed or disabled for normal video stream playback.

Necessary

Windows computer, DXMan program, Internet access

Instructions

Step 1

To disable the work of the codec, you need to remove it from the running processes of the operating system. To do this, press the key combination Ctrl + Alt + Del. If you are using Windows XP as your operating system, the Task Manager will automatically start after pressing these keys. If your operating system is Windows 7, after pressing these keys, a window with possible actions will appear. Select "Start Task Manager".

Step 2

In Device Manager, select the Processes tab. In the window that appears on the left, there is a list of the current processes of the operating system. Find the name of the codecs you want to disable in it, then right-click on the process. A context menu will appear, in which you need to select the "Disable Process" command. A warning window will pop up. In this window, confirm the closure of the process by clicking on the command "End process". After that, the work of the codec will be stopped.

Step 3

You can also use additional programs to manage codecs. Download the DXMan software from the Internet. It is completely free and takes up less than one megabyte of space. Install the program on your computer and run it. A window will appear, where the processes associated only with codecs will be displayed. It is much more convenient than through the "Task Manager", because you do not need to look for the codec among all the running processes of the operating system.

Step 4

Select the codec you want to pause. Click on the codec name with the right mouse button. A context menu will pop up. In order to find out information about the codec, in this menu select the Info command. To disable the selected codec, select the Remove command. In the window that appears, confirm the action by clicking "Yes". After that, the codec you have selected will be disabled.
