Codecs in the operating system perform the function of playing compressed multimedia files by unpacking them in the computer's RAM. To play a file of a certain format, the appropriate codec must be added to the system. Reinstalling and removing codecs may resolve the issue with media playback. So, if you need to uninstall any codec, proceed as follows.

Step 1
Through the menu "Start -> Settings -> Control Panel" (Start -> Settings -> Control Panel) go to the settings of your operating system. You will see a window with system utilities designed to configure the system. Then follow the link "Sounds and Multimedia" (Sounds and Audio Devices).

A window called "Sounds and Audio Devices Properties" will open before you. Left-click on the Hardware tab. A list of devices will appear in front of you. Depending on the type of codecs to be removed, select "Video Codecs" or "Audio Codecs" from the list provided.

After selecting the required type of codecs, click on the "Properties" button located just below, after which you will be taken to the tab of the same name. This tab contains a complete list of all codecs installed on your system.

Find the codec you want to get rid of by its name and uninstall it by pressing the Remove button at the bottom of the window.
Step 5
Sometimes, in order to completely and correctly uninstall the codec, it may be necessary to restart the computer. If such a need arises, the system will notify you about it using a pop-up window. Do not ignore these notifications, because if the codecs are not completely removed, problems may arise with further playback of multimedia files, just agree to restart, and the computer will perform this operation itself. I would like to note that at the moment, there are a large number of applications specifically designed for the correct uninstallation of unnecessary codecs.
