Step 1
If you are using Windows XP as your operating system, you can find out which codecs are installed on your computer in this way. Click on the "My Computer" icon with the right mouse button and select "Properties" from the menu that appears. Click on the Hardware tab, then select Device Manager. A window will open with a list of equipment that is on your computer.

Find the line "Sound, game, video devices". There is an arrow opposite the point. Click on this arrow with the left mouse button. The menu that opens will contain the lines "Audio codecs" and "Video codecs". Double-click the left mouse button on the component you need. A window will open with a list of all audio and video codecs that are on this computer.

If you are using Windows 7 or Vista operating system, this method will suit you. Click Start. Then select the component "All programs", and in it - "Utilities". In the utilities, click on "System Information". A window will appear, which will be divided into two parts. On the left side of this window, find the line "Components". Click the plus sign next to the row.

Then, in the list that appears, find the "Multimedia" component and also click on the plus sign next to it. Two lines will appear: "Audio codecs" and "Video codecs". Click on the required line with the left mouse button. All information about the codecs installed on the computer is now displayed in the right window of the program.

Not only the name of the codec is displayed, but also its manufacturer, version of the codec, as well as the place where it is installed. Pay attention to the line "Status". If this line says OK, then the codec is working fine. If not, then there should be a notice of its malfunctioning. If your version of the codec is very out of date, you can update it over the internet.
