The variety of devices for watching videos gives rise to a large number of different formats. The video clip can be recoded using codec programs. Let's look at an example of video encoding using the free utility VirtualDub.

Step 1
Use the free VirtualDub program. It is convenient, simple and versatile. With this program, you can transcode a video file to run, both on a computer and on the player. First, launch the program and see its main window. To add a file for encoding, press the CTRL + O combination or select the Open Video File item in the File drop-down menu.

The opened file can be seen in the preview window. The left window corresponds to the original file. The right window is the video after processing by the program. When you start the program and add a file, these windows are the same, since processing has not yet occurred.
Step 3
Suppose you decide to encode not the whole movie, but only part of it. In this case, it is necessary to indicate the programs which part needs to be changed. To do this, you need to select a fragment of the film using markers. This is easy to do. Left-click on the estimated start of the video segment. Click Home. Then similarly click on the end of the line and press End. The area will stand out and turn a slightly bluish color.
Step 4
Indicate the format with which you will recode your video. To do this, click on the Video menu and check the Normal recompress box. Then click again the Video menu tab and the Compression item. The program will display a window with the codecs that you have installed on your computer. Choose one of them. For example, Divx or xDiv. Confirm your choice with OK.
Step 5
Now you need to select the codec for the audio stream. If you skip this step, the resulting file may be too large. Click the Audio button and the Full Processing Mode sub-item in the top menu. Then you need to select the Source Audio item in the same menu. If you want to recode a video file without sound, check the No Audio checkbox. To select the audio codec itself, you need to select the Compression item and select the appropriate one from the list. After choosing, confirm your decision with the OK button.
Step 6
Move on to coding. Select File from the menu. Then Save as AVI. This action corresponds to the "hot key" F7. A window will appear in which you need to indicate the name of the converted file. And then click the Save button. While the encoding process is in progress, you will see the Status window. It indicates how much is left until the end of the conversion, what will be the final size of the file and other statistics. After this label disappears, you can check the quality of the recoded file.
