Of course, the easiest way to add more space to your hard drives is to purchase a new hard drive. This solution helps in a situation where the problem of insufficient space is affecting secondary partitions.

If you need to increase disk space on existing partitions, then you need to go the other way. When you need to slightly increase the local disk space, you can use a standard Windows function.

Press Win + E to open the My Computer menu. Right-click on the local drive you want to expand and go to Properties. Activate the function "Shrink this disk to save space" and click the "Apply" button.

Sometimes it is necessary to increase the volume of the partition on the hard disk before installing the operating system. This is especially true when moving from Windows XP to Windows Seven. Insert the Windows 7 installation disc into the drive and launch it.

At some point, the installation process will come to the selection of a hard disk partition. To display a menu of additional actions, click the "Disk Setup" button. Highlight the section that you plan to enlarge and click the "Delete" button.

Repeat this step for the section from which you want to separate the area. Note: You may already have unused disk space. In this case, you do not need to delete the second section. Click the "Create" button, set the file system and size of the future volume. Create the second disk in the same way.
