A screensaver, or screensaver (screen saver), is a small animation program that is launched when the computer is idle for a long time. This feature was introduced to protect the phosphor from burnout on cathode ray tube monitors.

How to choose a screensaver in Windows XP

The developers of Windows OS allow users to choose a screensaver from a ready-made set of animated pictures (nature themes, creeping line, piping, etc.) or set their own slideshow as a screensaver.

Right-click on an empty space on the screen and select "Properties" from the context menu. In the "Screensaver" tab, expand the "Screensaver" list and mark any animation. If you want to turn your own photos into a screensaver, place them in the My Pictures folder on your desktop. Click the Options button to select frame rate, image size, enable video effects, and more. View the result using the View button. From the "Interval" list, select the duration of computer idle time after which the screensaver will start.

For a slideshow, you can use frames from your favorite movie. To select them, while watching a video, press the Ctrl + PrintScreen keys. Launch a graphics editor (Photoshop, Paint or any other), select the "New" command from the "File" menu and paste the image from the clipboard into the editor window using the Ctrl + V keys. Save it with a handy name like 1.jpg. Create a selection of video frames in this way, place them in the folder "My Pictures" and use for the slideshow as a screen saver.

On the Internet, many resources offer a variety of screensavers to download for free. If it is an executable file with *.exe extension, just click on it to start the installation and follow the instructions. If the file has a *.scr extension, place it in the C: / Windows / system32 folder, where all screensavers are stored, and install in the usual way.

Be careful when installing screensavers from outside resources - disguised as a screen saver, you can get a virus program.

A screensaver can be used to further protect information on your computer. Check the "Password Protect" checkbox and you will only be able to exit the screen saver after entering the password.

If you have not assigned a password to log in, you cannot use the Password Protect function in the Screensaver window.

How to choose a screensaver in Windows 7

Call the context menu by right-clicking on an empty space on the desktop and select "Personalization". Click on the "Screensaver" icon in the lower right corner. In the new window, select the appropriate screensaver from the "Screensaver" drop-down list. Adjust the animation parameters in the same way as described above.

If you have an initial version of Windows 7 installed, the Personalize command will not be available. Click on the "Start" button, go to the control panel and mark the item "Design" in the list on the right. Click on the "Screen" icon and follow the link "Change screensaver".
