A keyboard is a device for entering data into a computer. Structurally, it is a set of numeric, alphabetic and control keys. Like any electronic device, the keyboard can fail.
On the back of the system unit there are two small round connectors for connecting a keyboard and mouse - PS / 2 ports. These ports are very sensitive to short circuits. If you happen to connect or disconnect the keyboard while the computer is on, it is possible that the port is out of order. In such a case, the keyboard is disabled due to this malfunction.
The problem might be bad contact. Turn off the computer, disconnect the mouse interface cable from the connector on the motherboard, and carefully reconnect it. After the contact is restored, the working keyboard will work.
Windows installations have the option to turn off devices to optimize power consumption. In the "Device Manager" expand the "Keyboard" list, right-click on the device icon and select the "Properties" option from the drop-down menu. In the "Power Management" tab, uncheck the box next to "Allow this device to turn off …". If your keyboard is connected via a USB port, you can prevent it from being disconnected in the Universal Serial Bus Controllers list.
The keyboard itself may be defective. If you have ever spilled liquid on it, there may be a short circuit in the conductive paths inside the device. You can try to repair damaged areas with conductive glue. To do this, disassemble the keyboard and rinse the film base on which the tracks are applied. Once dry, use a tester to locate open circuits. Use a sharpened match or toothpick to apply glue to the foil over the damaged tracks.
There might be a problem with the device driver. In the "Device Manager" right-click on the "Keyboard" icon to bring up the context menu. Choose the "Delete" command. Click OK to confirm and restart your computer. The system will detect the new device and install the driver on it.
Disabling the keyboard may be due to malicious activity of viruses. Run a deep scan of your computer with an antivirus program. Be careful when surfing the internet.
