The areas and possibilities for using Excel are varied:

  • An Excel sheet is a ready-made table, therefore Excel is often used to create documents without various calculations that have a tabular presentation (for example, a schedule, price lists in stores);
  • Excel has a set of different types of charts and graphs that use data to build tables from cells (a graph of the dynamics of sales for a specified period or a chart of the share of goods in a certain segment);
  • Excel can be used in the simplest home or personal calculations (keeping records of personal budget - received / spent, forecast);
  • Excel has a rich supply of mathematical and statistical functions, therefore, it can be very useful for schoolchildren and students in calculations in coursework, laboratory work;
  • Thanks to the built-in programming language Visual Basic (macros) in Excel, you can organize an application for automating the accounting of a small company. In many companies, this is the main environment for paperwork, calculations and creating diagrams. Also, Excel already has ready-made functions, and due to the ability to connect third-party add-ins, the functionality is expanded;
  • Excel can work like a database. But this functionality can be more fully implemented only from the 2007 version. in the 2003 version there was a limit on the number of lines on a sheet of 65536 (since 2007, already a little over a million). But the problem can be solved due to the easy interaction of Excel with the MS Access database;
  • Excel has a good tool for creating pivot tables that are irreplaceable in various kinds of reports.

The purpose of the elements:

  • The page title displays the title of the current working document
  • View selection - switch between worksheet display options
  • Ribbon is an interface element where command and settings buttons are located. The ribbon is divided into logical blocks by tabs. For example, the "View" tab helps to customize the appearance of the working document, "Formulas" - tools for performing calculations, etc.
  • Display scale - the name speaks for itself. We choose the ratio between the actual size of the sheet and its presentation on the screen.
  • Quick Access Toolbar - a zone for placing items that are used most often and are missing on the ribbon
  • The name field displays the coordinates of the selected cell or the name of the selected item
  • Scroll bars - allow you to scroll the sheet horizontally and vertically
  • The status bar displays some intermediate calculations, informs about the inclusion of "Num Lock", "Caps Lock", "Scroll Lock"
  • The formula bar is used to enter and display a formula in the active cell. If there is a formula in this line, in the cell itself you will see the result of the calculation or an error message.
  • Table Cursor - Displays the cell that is currently active for changing content
  • Row numbers and column names - the scale by which the cell address is determined. In the diagram, you can see that cell L17 is active, line 17 of the scale and element L are highlighted in dark color.
  • Sheet tabs help you switch between all sheets of a workbook

How to fix the table header in Excel

You can fix the table header in Excel using the "Freeze Region" menu item on the "View" tab. To fix the entire header of the table, we need to select the entire line under the header:

  • It is necessary to click on the ordinal number of the line on the left panel of the sheet
  • After selecting a line, you can go to the "Freeze Region" menu and select the "Freeze Region" item.
  • Now the tables will always be visible

In order to freeze only the first column, go to the View menu, click the Freeze Areas button, and select Freeze First Column.
