Step 1
Sometimes, after incorrectly removing the device, an error may occur due to the inability to correctly determine the file system. This problem may appear after abruptly disconnecting the USB cable while using a disc. Format the external drive if you do not need the information that is located on it.

Connect the hard drive to a suitable interface. Turn on your computer. Open the My Computer menu. Right-click on the external drive icon.

In the expanded selection, select "Format". In the new menu, select the file system format. Click the Get Started button. Safely remove the hard drive after formatting is complete.

To recover information from a hard drive that has a damaged file system, use the Mount'n'Drive program. Install the utility and open it.

Connect the external drive to your computer and click the "Scan" button. Wait until the program detects the required device. Now click on its icon with the left mouse button. Find Mount Device on the toolbar and click it. Select the letter that the program will assign to the new drive.
Step 6
Open your file manager and navigate to the local drive that just appeared. Copy the files you want to your stationary hard drive or other storage device. The process of copying information can take a long time. This is due to the low speed of data processing from the mounted disk.

Format the external hard drive after extracting important information. To do this, you can use the method described above, or use specialized utilities.
