Automatic updating of the operating system is one of the conditions for its safe use. Microsoft specialists are finalizing OS Windows, quickly fixing discovered vulnerabilities. However, many users choose to turn off automatic updates.
Instructions
Step 1
The reasons why users disable automatic updates can be different, from using an unlicensed operating system and not wanting to allow a computer to connect to any remote servers without their knowledge, to fearing a system crash after the next update. Whatever the reason, you must disable the service to cancel the update.
Step 2
In Windows XP, open Start - Control Panel - Automatic Updates. Select the "Disable Automatic Updates" option. Save your changes.
Step 3
In OS Windows 7, disabling automatic updates is performed in a similar way. Open: "Start" - "Control Panel" - "Windows Update". Select "Configure Settings" from the menu on the left. In the drop-down menu, select the option "Do not check for updates." Save your changes.
Step 4
Even if you turned off the update in the settings, the corresponding service continues to work. It should also be disabled. In Windows XP, open Start - Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services. Select "Automatic update" in the list of services, in the window that opens, click the "Stop" button. For Startup Type, select Disabled. Save your changes. In Windows 7, the automatic updating service is disabled in the same way.
Step 5
If Automatic Updates is enabled again after restarting your computer, in Windows XP open Start - Run, type msconfig and click OK. In Windows 7, enter the same command in the search bar ("Start" - "Find"). In the window that opens, select the "Services" tab and uncheck the "Automatic Updates" service (if it is in the list).
Step 6
Sometimes, even after disabling automatic updates, the Windows 7 operating system stubbornly continues to climb the network, connecting to Microsoft servers. To determine through which ports the connection is made, type in the command line ("Start" - "All Programs" - "Accessories" - "Command Line") the command netstat –aon. You will see a list of all connections with the used ports and IP addresses of remote computers. The BWMeter program can also be of great help, allowing you to completely control traffic.
