The power supply is one of the main elements of a computer. Without this component, the operation of the entire system is not possible. When diagnosing a computer breakdown, you must first check its serviceability. For this, the method of measuring the voltage supplied to it using a multimeter is used.

Step 1

To measure the voltage on the devices, a multimeter is used - a device with which you can measure the voltage of an electric current on almost any device. Before measuring, read the instructions for the device to learn more about its capabilities and mechanism of operation.

Step 2

Open the computer case with a screwdriver or special latches. After that, disconnect the power supply connector that goes to the motherboard. It is on it that all measurements should be made.

Step 3

Preset your multimeter with a DC volt range. To do this, move the handle of the device to the 12V position to measure the DC current (approximately 20 VDC). If your device has a function to automatically tune the desired band, you can skip this step.

Step 4

Depending on the version of the power supply, your connector will have a corresponding number of holes, i.e. pins through which voltage is transmitted. There are loops with 20 and 24 pins. Count the number of holes on the wire. Numbered the left row of the connector from 1 to 10 or from 1 to 12, depending on the version of the power supply. Number the second row from 11 to 20 (from 13 to 24).

Step 5

Connect the red test lead of the multimeter to pin 9. The hole should have a voltage of about 5 volts, which will show on your device's display. If there is no voltage, then there are serious problems in the functioning of the power supply board.

Step 6

If the voltage was determined correctly, connect the multimeter to pin 14, which should have a voltage of 3-5 volts. After that, press the computer power button without removing the device probe from the pin. The voltage on the screen of the device should drop to 0. If this does not happen, the problem lies either in the processor or in the computer motherboard. Check the 8 pins in the same way. If voltage is present at these holes, then your power supply is in order and the problem may be in some other device on your computer. The power supply voltage measurement is complete and you can close the computer case.
