The Linux operating system increases the number of its fans every year, it has a lot of undeniable advantages. But for a user trying to switch from Windows to Linux, there may be many difficulties in mastering this OS. In particular, the procedure for installing programs turns out to be unusual.

Step 1
The main advantages of Linux are high reliability, resistance to viruses and Trojans, no need to purchase a license - the overwhelming majority of Linux distributions and software are supplied free of charge. When installing the OS, you can install some programs immediately by selecting them during the installation process from the list provided. You can add other required applications after installing Linux.

Installing software on Linux is fundamentally different from the process on Windows. The main difference is that the installed program is a separate module; it does not register data about itself in various directories and in the registry, as it happens in the OS from Microsoft. If you have installed hundreds of programs, after which, for some reason, decided to reinstall the OS, you will just need to connect the directory with the already installed programs. After that, they will all be at your disposal again. It should be noted that in Linux it is not customary to reinstall the OS; in case of failures, it is repaired.

The actual installation of programs in Linux can take place in two main ways - in graphical mode, that is, using a special program manager, and from the console. Most programs on Linux come from repositories hosted on the Internet, so a network connection is required. To install the program, start the program manager, a list of available packages will appear. Check the boxes for the programs you want to install and start the installation.

After starting the installation, the program manager will check the so-called dependencies - that is, it will determine whether, along with the selected programs, any other modules necessary for the operation of the marked applications need to be loaded. After that, you will be asked to confirm the installation, agree. Installation takes a matter of seconds or minutes, depending on the size of the program. At the end of the process, a message will appear stating that the selected packages are installed, you can use them.

When installing from the console (command line), special commands are used, the format of which depends on the distribution kit used. For example, if you are running Ubuntu (Kubuntu), one of the most popular Linux distributions, to install the program, you need to type the command apt-get install and specify the name of the application to be installed. For example, if you want to install the Opera browser, then the command will be like this: apt-get install opera. The operating system itself will connect to the repository, check the dependencies. After confirming the installation, the browser will be installed on your computer. To remove it, you must enter the command apt-get remove opera.

There are other ways to install on Linux, for example from source. For a beginner, this is the most difficult way, requiring some knowledge of working with this OS, so it is better not to use it when you first get acquainted with Linux. In practice, when mastering it, you should find a specific example of installing a program specifically for your distribution kit and repeat all the steps described.

It should be noted that a user trying to switch from Windows to Linux may at first be very disappointed with the unusualness of this OS. But if he nevertheless tries to figure it out and works for a while, he will begin to get real pleasure from working with this OS. And after a while, it will be almost impossible to get him back to Windows again. At the same time, nothing prevents you from having Windows on your computer as a second system.
