Winchester is a complex device that uses the latest scientific advances in microelectronics, micromechanics and coding theory. It is impossible to carry out a full-fledged hard disk repair without the use of special equipment. Of all types of hard drive malfunctions, under normal conditions it is recommended to repair only the electronics board.

Necessary

  • - a working hard drive;
  • - tester;
  • - oscilloscope.

Instructions

Step 1

Perform initial diagnostics of the hard drive by connecting it to a separate power supply unit. In this case, a characteristic sound should be heard for 4-7 seconds, indicating the unwinding of the spindle device. After that, a click should follow, indicating the removal of the heads from the parking zone. This is followed by a slight crackling sound lasting 1–2 seconds, accompanying the recalibration process.

Step 2

If you hear an intermittent knock when you turn on the power of the hard drive, this indicates that the drive cannot read information from the surfaces of the drives. This may be due to a malfunction of the HDA switch or the electronics board. Replace the control board with a known good one from a hard drive of the same model using the same firmware version. If the knocking stops, but the hard drive does not work, continue looking for a malfunction in the HDA switch.

Step 3

Check the quality of the soldering of the spindle motor control IC. Solder it if necessary. If the microcircuit has been exposed to prolonged overheating, it is probably out of order. In this case, replace it with a good microcircuit.

Step 4

If a hard drive malfunction has led to a failure of the computer's power supply, the cause may be a breakdown-breakdown of the protective diode in the +12 V circuit. Call this circuit with a tester and dismantle the protective diode, and replace it as soon as possible. Trouble-free operation of the hard drive without a diode is possible, but not guaranteed.

Step 5

When repairing your hard drive at home, follow the "don't make it worse than it used to be" principle. Try to pinpoint the cause of the malfunction, if it is related to the inoperative technical part of the hard disk drive, return the hard drive for repair to a specialized service center. Also, you should not risk it if the disc contains really important personal or business information.
