The procedure for changing the official iPhone firmware is commonly referred to as a jailbreak. The operation was declared completely legal by the decision of the US Supreme Court, although Apple does not encourage its implementation.
Instructions
Step 1
Download the redsn0w utility files of the version corresponding to the operating system being used and the firmware file of the mobile device to your computer. All of these files are freely distributed on the Internet. Unzip the downloaded redsn0w file and run the application. Please note that you must use Windows XP compatibility mode. To do this, open the file properties dialog box and apply the checkbox to the "Run this program in compatibility mode" field. Confirm the execution of the selected action by clicking the OK button and wait until the main screen of the redsn0w utility appears.
Step 2
Use the Browse button to specify the path to the downloaded iPhone firmware file, and wait until a message appears indicating that the application has successfully processed the firmware file. Click Next and apply the check boxes for the desired options in the next dialog box. To perform the jailbreak operation, it is enough to mark only the Install Cydia checkbox. Do not click the Next button.
Step 3
Press and hold the Power button on your mobile device until the Power Off slider appears. Follow the suggested action and connect iPhone to your computer. Click the Next button in the redsn0w application window and hold down the Power button of the mobile device for three seconds. Press the Home button while continuing to hold the Power button. Continue to hold down the Home button, but release the Power button.
Step 4
Please note that these actions must be performed exactly at the signal of the redsn0w application, and non-observance of the required time intervals may lead to the need to repeat the entire procedure.
Step 5
Wait until a message appears stating that further actions will be performed on the mobile device, and close the utility by clicking the Finish button. The jailbreak procedure will be performed automatically and does not require any active actions from the user.
