The installation of new icons in the Windows version 7 operating system belongs to the category of personalization tasks and is performed using the standard tools of the system itself without the involvement of additional software.
Instructions
Step 1
Download the archive with the selected icons to your computer and unpack it in any convenient place. Call the main system menu by clicking the "Start" button and go to the "Computer" item. Expand the system drive link and select the folder named System32.
Step 2
Select all files of the downloaded archive and open their context menu by clicking the right mouse button. Specify the "Copy" command and paste them into the System32 folder.
Step 3
Call the desktop context menu by clicking the right mouse button and select "Personalization". Use the "Change Desktop Icons" command and select the icon you want to replace. Click the "Change Icon" button and specify the path to the desired icon.
Step 4
Use an alternative method of changing icons. To do this, return to the main menu "Start" and go to the item "Control Panel". Open the link "Adjusting the view and performance of the system" by double-clicking and unchecking the box in the line "Display thumbnails instead of icons". Confirm the saving of the changes made by clicking the "Apply" button.
Step 5
Return to the main Start menu again and go to the Run dialog. Type regedit in the "Open" line and confirm the launch of the registry editor utility by clicking the OK button.
Step 6
Expand the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / Software / Microsoft / Windows / CurrentVersion / Explorer branch and create a new folder named Shell Icons in it. Open the created folder and call its context menu by clicking the right mouse button in the right part of the dialog box that opens. Specify the New command and select the DWORD Value option. Type 3 in the Parameter field and confirm your choice by pressing the OK button.
Step 7
Call the context menu of the created parameter by clicking the right mouse button and select the "Change" command. Enter the full path to the file of the required icon in the "Value" line of the new dialog box and confirm the saving of the changes made by clicking the OK button.
Step 8
Exit the Registry Editor utility and reboot the system to apply the changes.
