Icons are images that represent the contents of a shortcut, program, or file. They are used to quickly find differences between items on the desktop or any directory. For example, on the desktop of your computer, you can find 2 files with the same name, but different resolutions. Outwardly, they will be distinguished by an icon.

Instructions
Step 1
If you take a quick look at your desktop (computer), you can see a lot of folders and shortcuts - these are desktop elements. Each such element can be changed, i.e. replace the icon. To place icons on the desktop, it is enough to have basic knowledge of the operating systems of the Windows line. Find any file in the folder that you want to run from the desktop, right-click on it, select Send, then select Desktop (create shortcut). Thus, a shortcut will appear on the desktop, the graphic basis of which will be an icon.
Step 2
To change any display settings for a newly created shortcut, right-click on the object and select "Properties". In the window that opens, go to the "Shortcut" tab and click the "Change icon" button.
Step 3
In the "Change Icon" window that opens, select any icon suggested by the system, or try to set your picture as an icon. To do this, click the "Browse" button, specify the path to the picture and click the "Open" button. The Windows operating system recognizes files with the.ico extension as icons. Such files can be made using special programs, or you can try to make them personally. To create your own icon, you need to find a suitable picture, given that it will be small. Icon files can be 16, 32 and 48 pixels wide (high).
Step 4
Open Paint, which comes standard with Windows operating systems. Click the "Start" menu, select "Run", in the window that opens, enter mspaint and click the "OK" button. In the main window of the program, press the key combination Ctrl + O and select the file suitable for the future icon.
Step 5
Now press the key combination Ctrl + W, you will see the "Stretch and Skew" window. Here you need to specify the value in percentage by which you are going to reduce the picture. Depending on the size of your image, percentages can either increase or decrease. For the first time, you can set both values to 50%. Press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + E and check the size of your image. Initially, you can try to get the largest size for the icon - 48 pixels. If your value is much higher, try again to reduce the image by pressing Ctrl + W.
Step 6
After achieving the desired result, all that remains is to save the file. Press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + S and click the Save button. To convert a file with a standard bmp extension into an ico file (icon or icon), you need to rename it using the file manager Total Commander or by enabling the display of extensions in your system. The file you need has been received, use the method described in the second step to change the icon.
