The file name in Windows operating systems can be changed by the user at his discretion. The user does not have access to rename only protected system files and files used by any program at a given time.
Instructions
Step 1
Open the directory (folder) containing the file you want to assign a different name to. Or enter the file name in the search bar on the Start menu.
Step 2
Select this file by clicking on it with the left mouse button once. You can also use the arrow keys on your keyboard to do this.
Step 3
Click on the selected file again with the left mouse button. After that, the text of the file name is highlighted for editing.
Step 4
Also, select the text of the file name for editing by clicking on the selected file with the right mouse button once and selecting the "Rename" line in the appeared context menu. After that, you can enter a new file name.
Step 5
Erase the existing one and enter a new file name. Then press the Enter key on your keyboard or left-click anywhere in the open window.
Step 6
You can also change the name of the file through the dialog box of its properties. To do this, open the folder with the desired file.
Step 7
Right click on the selected file once. A list of possible actions on the file will appear.
Step 8
In the list that appears, click once with the left mouse button on the "Properties" line. A dialog box with basic settings and properties of this file will open.
Step 9
In the window that opens, activate the "General" tab. This tab displays the name, type, size of the file, the application associated with it, the location of the file on disk, and so on.
Step 10
At the top of the activated tab, find the line with the existing file name and enter a new one. After that, press successively the "Apply" and OK buttons. The file name will change to a new one.
