Step 1

To rename a file, start Total Commander by double-clicking its shortcut on the desktop with the left mouse button.

In one of the navigation areas of the program, open the directory where the required file is stored by double-clicking on the names of the folders from the path to the file.

You can also use programmatic search. To do this, click on the "Search" icon in the top menu of the program or press the "Alt + F7" key combination on the keyboard. In the window that appears, enter a query with the name of the desired file in the "Search files" text box and click the "Start search" button. Once the file appears in the bottom Search Results box, click the Abort button. Click on the line with the found file once with the left mouse button and click "Go to file".

In the Navigation Pane, right-click on the desired file once and click the Rename / Move Files icon. The window for managing the selected files will open.

In the line with the location directory and file name, select the last one and enter a new name. Click the OK button.

You can also rename a file in Total Commander software by selecting the file with a single right-click and pressing the "F2" key on your keyboard. After that, the name of the file in the navigation area is highlighted for editing. Enter a new name for the file and press the "Enter" key on your keyboard.

Total Commander has a batch file renaming function, thanks to which the user can rename all selected files with the same name. The same function can be used to rename a single file.

Step 8

Select the desired file in the Navigation Pane by right-clicking on it once. Go to the main top menu "Files" and click the line "Batch rename files …" or press the key combination "Ctrl + M" on the keyboard. The "Batch Rename" window will open with all its settings.

Step 9

In the "Find and replace" block in the "Find" line, enter the old file name (or its replaced part). In the line "Replace with" enter a new file name (or replacement part).

Step 10

Click the Run button. After all the selected files have been renamed, click the "Close" button.
