The Windows Explorer or explorer.exe error message is usually caused by one of three reasons: an incorrectly installed program, a malicious effect of a virus, or damage to the Explorer file itself.
Instructions
Step 1
Perform a full scan of the computer system with the installed anti-virus program. It is recommended to use AVZ application to remove both trojan and spyware programs.
Step 2
Try to identify the recently installed application that may be causing the File Explorer error message. Uninstall this program and restart your computer.
Step 3
If the identification of such a program is not possible, a complete cleaning of the computer and reinstallation of the operating system may be required.
Step 4
Check to see if the explorer.exe error message is being triggered by trying to open some video files. The problem may arise due to the built-in OC function of creating hidden thumbs.db files, designed to display thumbnails of the first frames of a given video. If the selected frame cannot be displayed correctly, an error message appears. In this case, start the "Windows Explorer" application and open the "Tools" menu of the upper service panel of the program window.
Step 5
Select "Folder Options" and go to the "View" tab in the properties dialog box that opens. Uncheck the "Show file icons in thumbnails" checkbox and confirm the changes made by clicking OK. Then find and delete any remaining files named thumbs.db on your computer.
Step 6
Download and install the AVZ application on your computer. Open the "File" menu of the upper service panel of the main window of the installed program and select "System Restore".
Step 7
Apply the checkboxes in the fields: "restore desktop settings", "restore explorer settings" in the opened application dialog box and authorize the execution of the selected actions by clicking the "Perform marked operations" button. Reboot your computer system to save your changes.
