The file type is determined by the extension in its name - several letters of the Latin alphabet to the right of the last dot. Sometimes it is necessary to copy, move or delete files of only one type, leaving all others in place. It is not very convenient to perform the necessary operation with each file separately, and there is no need for this - the capabilities of modern file managers allow you to select and highlight files according to various criteria, including the extension in the name.
Instructions
Step 1
Open the standard file manager of your operating system. If you have any version of Windows OS installed, then to launch this program, just press the key combination Win + E. In the latest version of this OS (Windows 7), the file manager (Explorer) icon is fixed on the taskbar, next to the Start button - you can start the application by clicking on this icon.
Step 2
Navigate the folder tree in the Explorer window to the directory that contains the files you are interested in. In the file manager of Windows 7, there is a search field in the upper right corner of the window - it contains text that begins with the word "Search", and then the name of the current folder is usually indicated. In this field, enter a search term - an asterisk, then a period and an extension corresponding to the file type you are interested in. For example, if you want to select.
Step 3
Click once on any of the filtered files to move the input focus from the search field to the list of files. Then press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + A and Explorer will highlight this entire list containing only the files of the required type.
Step 4
If you are using an OS of an earlier version, you will not find the fields for the search query in the Explorer window. In this case, open the "View" section in its menu and select the "Table" line - the list of files in this display mode has a "File type" column. Click on the heading of this column and the files will be sorted according to their extensions. Find the first file of the group of the type you need in the list and click it. Then press and hold the Shift key and press the down arrow button until all the files you want are highlighted.
Step 5
You can do it differently - right-click the folder icon and select the "Find" line in the context menu. In this way, you start the operating system component, in the field of which you must enter a search query in the format described in the second step, and click the "Find" button. When the list of files of the required type is compiled, proceed in the same way as described in the third step.
