It is not always convenient to store the My Documents folder on the same drive as your system files. Indeed, in emergency situations, the operating system has to be reinstalled without preliminary preparation and without backing up the necessary files. In this case, the files contained in the "My Documents" folder will be lost forever. Better not to go to extremes and move the "My Documents" folder to another drive while the system is functioning normally.
Instructions
Step 1
To move the "My Documents" folder to another drive, first decide what kind of drive it will be, whether there is enough space on it. To do this, check the size of the "My Documents" folder and the amount of free space on the disk where you plan to move the folder.
Step 2
To determine the size of the "My Documents" folder, right-click on it from the desktop and select the "Properties" command from the drop-down menu. Go to the "General" tab in the window that opens and remember or write down the data indicated in the "Size" line. You can determine the free space on a disk in a similar way: go to the "My Computer" folder and select the required disk. Click on its icon with the right mouse button, in the drop-down menu select the "Properties" command, estimate the free space on the "General" tab.
Step 3
On the drive where you are going to move the "My Documents" folder, create a new folder and name it "My Documents". You can create a new folder from the "File" menu bar. Select the command "New", from the drop-down menu select the line "New folder". Enter the folder name ("My Documents"), click anywhere in the window to complete the entry. The same can be done if you right-click on any free space in the window, select the same items from the drop-down menu (“Create” and “New folder”).
Step 4
Go to your desktop and right-click on the "My Documents" folder icon. Select the "Properties" command. In the window that opens, go to the "Destination folder" tab. Remember that only the shortcut to the folder is displayed on the desktop, and the folder itself is in a different location.
Step 5
In the "Destination folder location" line, specify the address of the folder you just created. To do this, open the created folder, copy the address of its location from the address bar and paste this address into the field on the "Destination folder" tab. Another way: click on the "Move" button and in the window that opens, specify the path to the newly created folder, moving through the directory branches. After specifying the path to the folder, click the "Apply" button and confirm the movement of the folder in the window that appears. Wait for the contents of the "My Documents" folder to move to the new directory. Click OK or X to close the My Documents folder properties window.
