Every user working with office documents sometimes needs to use non-standard characters in the text. Searching for the right button on the keyboard makes no sense: many symbols on the keys are simply not there. However, the MS Word editor provides other options.

Instructions

Step 1

The em dash is one of the symbols that make the text easy to read. However, it is not so easy to put an em dash using keyboard input without additional key configuration made in advance. Although in this case, the MS Word function called "AutoCorrect" comes to the rescue. Its essence is that after entering certain characters, the program automatically replaces them with other, preset characters. This is how, for example, large letters appear at the beginning of sentences. The same is true for the em dash. In order to check the program settings, go to the "Service" menu in the "AutoCorrect options" item. You will see a window with different function settings.

Step 2

To use an em dash via autocorrect, enter the hyphen "-". With a space after it, write any word and press the space again. The hyphen you enter will turn into an em dash "-".

Step 3

You can put an em dash in another way. The Word editor has the ability to insert various special characters, which are either impossible or difficult to enter from the keyboard. To see the entire list of available symbols, go to the "Insert" menu and select the "Symbol" command. You will see a new window with many characters that can be used to insert into your document. After reviewing everything, select the em dash and click the "Insert" button. Also, using the "Keyboard shortcut …" button, you can assign a combination of keyboard buttons, which, when pressed, will enter an em dash character into a document opened in MS Word.
