There are three main variations in the length of the dash. Punctuation in some foreign languages for each of them provide their own rules of use. In the Russian language there are no special rules on this subject, but nevertheless, the opportunity to use all variants of the dash exists.

Instructions

Step 1

Try using the default em dash autocorrect setting in Microsoft Office Word. The program should make this change after you finish printing the word following this character. In this case, only the dash that is surrounded by spaces on both sides should change.

Step 2

Use the "hot keys" to insert a long space into the text if there is no automatic replacement or if you want to add this character to the already typed text. The key combination ctrl and "Minus" on the additional ("gray" or "numeric") keyboard is intended for printing an em dash. If you need an even longer dash, then use a combination of three keys: ctrl + alt="Image" + "Minus" on the additional keyboard.

Step 3

Use hexadecimal character codes in Unicode tables as an alternative way to enter dashes of different lengths. An em dash corresponds to the code 2014 - type this number in the desired place in the text, and then press the key combination alt="Image" + x (this is x). The word processor will remove the numbers you entered and place an em dash instead. To print a medium dash character, use the code 2013. There is also a so-called "electronic dash", which corresponds to the code 2012. By definition, it should be placed slightly higher than other types of dashes (in the middle of the height of a capital letter), however, in Word text documents there is no difference with a middle dash is not noticeable.

Step 4

Go to the "Insert" tab of the word processor menu if you prefer to perform all operations with the mouse. Expand the drop-down list on the "Symbol" button in the rightmost group of commands and click the "Other symbols" line. In the "Symbol" window that opens, go to the "Special Characters" tab and click on the required line in the list placed there - the top three items in it contain different types of dash. Then click on the "Insert" button.
