The ability to work with layers is the most important advantage of Adobe Photoshop over less advanced graphic editors. In the process of such work, it is quite often necessary to create duplicate layers. There are more than enough ways to implement this operation in Photoshop.

Instructions

Step 1

The image with layers is contained in a file with the psd extension - to load it into a graphics editor, and at the same time launch Photoshop, double-click this file with the left mouse button.

Step 2

If the panel for working with layers is not displayed in the application window, press the F7 function key or select the "Layers" line in the "Window" section of the editor menu.

Step 3

Right-click on the row of the required layer in the panel and select "Duplicate Layer" from the pop-up context menu. The same item is also in the "Layers" section of the Photoshop menu. Both of them open a small window in which you need to either enter the name of the duplicate layer in the field with a non-trivial "How" designation, or leave it at the default value. The created copy can be placed not only in the current document, but also in any of the currently open ones - the choice can be made in the “Document” drop-down list. Click OK when ready to duplicate.

Step 4

When duplicating, you can do without a dialog box - press the "hot keys" Ctrl + J, and Photoshop will create a duplicate of the selected layer without any questions, using the default values from the dialog box.

Step 5

The second icon from the right at the bottom edge of the layers panel is intended for creating new layers, but it can also be used to duplicate existing ones. To do this, drag the line of the required layer onto the icon with the mouse. As in the previous step, the graphical editor uses the default values from the duplicate dialog when creating a copy, without showing it to the user.

Step 6

Another method can be used to duplicate layers that have no effects applied. Select the entire image of this layer by pressing the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + A, and copy it to the clipboard (Ctrl + C). Then give the command on the Paste operation (Ctrl + V), and Photoshop will create a new layer, placing a copy of the duplicated in it.
