A cable connecting the USB port of a computer to a cell phone, digital camera, card reader, or other peripheral device may break if used roughly. Having several defective cords, you can make one serviceable one yourself.

Instructions

Step 1

Cut each of the cables in half. Strip and tin the ends of the wires.

Step 2

Take a metal clip to attach the curtain to the curtain rod. Solder a pin to it.

Step 3

Place a clip with a pin on one of the test leads of the multimeter. Switch the device itself to the ohmmeter mode with audible continuity.

Step 4

Further painstaking work lies ahead. If some of the connectors are tiny, you will need to use a magnifying glass. Determine and sketch the correspondence of the connector pins to the wire colors (there is no standard for this). The braid, if present, must be bonded to the connector housing. Order half of cables with at least one break, at least one short circuit and do not use any more.

Step 5

It is possible to significantly facilitate the work of dialing the halves of the cable if there are mating parts for the connectors. For plugs that are designed to be connected to a computer, the mating parts can be removed from the defective motherboard. Mating parts for connectors intended for connection to telephones, card readers, cameras, printers, etc. can be purchased at a store selling radio components, or removed from faulty peripheral devices (not necessarily for the same purpose).

Step 6

Find the pinouts on the next page:

Step 7

Guided by the pinouts, indicate on the sketches the correspondence of the line names to the wire colors for each of the halves of the cables.

Step 8

Make new cables from the serviceable halves, connecting their wires of the same name. Solder and insulate all connections carefully. Then ring the ready-made cables to make sure that exactly the contacts of the same name are connected, and that there are no breaks and short circuits in them.

Step 9

Try to connect your phone, camera, card reader or other peripheral device to the computer with the resulting cords. Make sure the cables are functional.
