DHT in BitTorrent is used to find new file sharing participants. When connecting to a DHT network, a client connects with several other users - network nodes, and then he himself becomes a node of this network.
Instructions
Step 1
In the main menu of the program, at the top of it there is a menu bar, select the "Options" menu with one click with the left mouse button, and select "Preferences" in the drop-down list of settings.
Step 2
So, the program settings window has opened in front of you. In the left part of this window there is a list of categories into which the settings are divided. You need a BitTorrent category, select it with the left mouse button.
Step 3
The corresponding settings appeared in the main part of the window, where you will see the checkboxes opposite the items "Enable DHT Network" and "Enable DHT for new torrents" (Enable DHT for new torrents). Uncheck them to disable the DHT function.
Step 4
Disable DHT if you download from a private tracker with its passkey system, where administrators do not know how or do not want to make all torrents private. And the thing is that with the help of DHT users are able to find out the passkey that other users have, and dishonest users can easily use these passkeys to download files from someone else's name. It would also be advisable to disable DHT in the event that you download exclusively from the correct closed trackers. Thus, if in this case DHT is enabled in the client, then it turns out that the client will connect to the DHT network and thereby spend extra traffic on it, but for any distribution DHT will not be used here. You can also disable DHT if you do not need to know more detailed information about the participants in the file exchange, and if it is not difficult or even convenient for you to apply for the list of peers directly to the tracker. On the other hand, if the torrent file was created without a tracker, then DHT becomes the only way to get information about other participants.
