The choice of how to reduce the distance between words depends on the capabilities of the software that will be used to display the text. For example, basic text editors will not be able to reproduce the text formatting available in word processors like Microsoft Word. And Word, in turn, will not understand the formatting commands used to display the text of web pages in browsers.

Instructions

Step 1

Determine the type of file that contains the text that needs to be changed. If the file has a txt extension, it means that you cannot use the formatting commands. In this case, the spacing between words can be reduced by decreasing the font size. It is possible that in the original text, instead of one space between words, several of these characters are put or tabs are used, which could lead to too large spacing. In this case, it will be very easy to reduce the distance between words.

Step 2

Open the Find and Replace dialog. In the Word text editor, press CTRL + H to do this, while Notepad and many other programs use CTRL + R. Enter two spaces in the search field and one in the replacement field, and click the Replace All button. Almost all text editors at the end of this procedure show information about the number of substitutions made - press the same button until the number of substitutions is different from zero. In this way, you get rid of unnecessary spaces that increase the distance between words.

Step 3

Copy one of the tabs to do the same for these non-printable characters. Open the search and replace dialog, paste the copied into the search field, put a space in the replacement field and click the "Replace All" button.

Step 4

If you have determined by the file extension that this format allows the use of text formatting (for example, doc, docx), then you can add another one to the procedures described above for reducing the distance between words. Excessively large spacing can be caused by using the Justify text command. With this formatting, the text editor stretches the spaces between words on some lines while leaving them unchanged on others. Select all the text (CTRL + A) or just the required section and press the keyboard shortcut CTRL + L - these "hot keys" correspond to the command to align text to the left.

Step 5

If the test is stored in web document formats (html, htm, php), then start the fight to reduce the distance between words by replacing double non-breaking spaces in the entire text with single ones. To do this, in the search and replace dialog, you must specify the following sequence of characters in the search field:, and in the replacement field - only half of this set:. Repeat this replacement until the number of replacements made is zero. There is no need to replace ordinary double spaces with single spaces, since browsers display any number of them as a single space. But tabs in web documents can also cause increased spacing, so follow the procedure described in the third step.

Step 6

Replace the justify width command with left alignment in the style description for the problem text. To do this, you need to find the justify value and change it to left.

Step 7

Use the word-spacing property of the style description language to force the spacing between words to be sized appropriately. The corresponding code for texts throughout the document might look like this:

body {word-spacing: 5px;}
