It is most convenient to number rows or columns in tables using the Excel spreadsheet editor from Microsoft's office software suite. This package is very common, and its spreadsheet editor is the most commonly used program for working with data tables. The operation of numbering with its help is not difficult and can be implemented in several ways, and ready-made tables can be moved, for example, into documents in the format of a text editor Word.
Necessary
Microsoft Excel 2007 Spreadsheet Editor
Instructions
Step 1
Open Microsoft Excel and load the table, the rows or columns of which you want to number. If the table does not yet have a column or row in which numbers should be, create one and place the insertion cursor in the first cell.
Step 2
Enter the number you want to start numbering with. It doesn't have to be one - you can use any positive or negative number and zero. In addition, you can put a formula here that will calculate the first number according to some algorithm. For example, such a formula can read the value of the last table number from the previous page in an Excel workbook and continue numbering on the current page.
Step 3
Press Enter after entering the starting value for the sequence, and then re-position the cursor in the first cell. Click on the "Fill" button in the menu of the spreadsheet editor, placed on the "Main" tab in the "Edit" group of commands. In the drop-down list of commands, select the item "Progression" and the editor will open a window with settings for the numbering parameters.
Step 4
Check the column by column for top-to-bottom numbering, or by row for left-to-right numbering.
Step 5
Leave the default checkbox in the "arithmetic" field so that the editor uses the usual numbering, in which each subsequent number is greater than the previous one by one. If another step is required, then set the required value in the field with this name ("Step"). The "Limit value" field limits the numbering - write in it the maximum allowed line or column number.
Step 6
Click the "OK" button and Excel will number the rows or columns according to your settings.
Step 7
There is a less complicated way of filling a range of cells with numbers, which is suitable for simple numbering of relatively small tables. Enter the starting number in the first cell, the next in the second. Then select both cells and for the lower right corner of the selection area drag the border of the selection to the last cell of the column or column, which should contain numbers. Excel will fill this entire range with numbers, continuing the numbering you started with the same increment.
