For owners of modern computers, the problem of lack of hard disk space is not as acute as it used to be with small hard drives. Nevertheless, users from time to time are faced with the fact that it is necessary to somehow free up some space on the hard disk.
Instructions
Step 1
Check if you've actually deleted files you don't need. Usually, they are first placed in a temporary storage - the Recycle Bin. They take up space there as well as on the disk, so you need to periodically empty the trash.
Step 2
You can compress files. Compressed files will be highlighted in blue, and otherwise will not differ from normal files, but will take up less space. Compression can only be performed on hard drives that are managed by the NTFS file system. In addition, it is not recommended to compress system files and folders, since they prioritize data access speed. In addition, system files are often changed, then they are compressed again on the fly and thus their fragmentation increases, which also affects the speed of the system as a whole. It is best to compress pictures, audio and video files.
Step 3
To compress a folder or file, right-click on it and select Properties from the context menu. In the window that opens, go to the General tab and click the Other button there. Next, check the boxes and apply the changes. Now all files placed in this folder will be compressed.
Step 4
Also, pay attention to the temporary folders of operating systems, periodically delete files from them, program reports, temporary files for unpacking archives and other temporary information are saved there. And it's not just the Temp folder in the root directory of the system drive. Temporary folders are created by applications in the user profile folders, they also need to be viewed and cleaned. Clean up the temporary folders of browsers, they save all video, audio and simple text files that you download while browsing the web.
