In the Windows XP operating system, the user can customize the display of various elements to their liking. There are several components and tools to change the look of folders.
Instructions
Step 1
To change the folder icon, move the cursor to its icon, right-click on it and select Properties from the context menu. A new dialog box will open. Go to the "Settings" tab in it and click on the "Change icon" button in the "Folder Icons" group. Select a new icon from the available thumbnails or click on the "Browse" button and specify the path to your own icon. Click OK and apply the new settings
Step 2
If the selected folder is located in another folder, you can customize its appearance when viewed in thumbnail view by assigning an image that will serve as a hint about the contents of the folder. To do this, on the "Settings" tab of the folder properties window, click on the "Select picture" button in the "Pictures of folders" group. Specify the path to the image that will become the thumbnail and apply the new settings.
Step 3
Depending on the attribute assigned to the folder, it may appear explicitly or be invisible. In the Properties window, open the General tab and set the marker to the Hidden field in the Attributes group. Apply the new settings. The folder will become invisible. If the folder has become translucent, you need to call the "Folder Options" component and set the necessary parameters in it.
Step 4
To open the "Folder Options" component, open any folder and select "Folder Options" from the "Tools" menu, or open "Control Panel" from the "Start" menu and select the desired icon in the "Appearance and Themes" category. In the dialog box that opens, go to the "View" tab and in the "Advanced options" group set the marker in the "Do not show hidden files and folders" field.
Step 5
An open folder may contain a common task bar. To customize the display of this pane, go to the General tab in the Folder Options window and place a marker in the Display a list of common tasks in folders box in the Tasks group. Click on the "Apply" button.
Step 6
Files in an open folder can be displayed in different ways: in the form of a list, thumbnails, tables, and so on. To customize the mode that suits you, open the desired folder and select "View" from the top menu bar. In the drop-down menu, set a marker opposite the way of displaying files that suits you. For the same purposes, you can use the "View" button, it looks like a square with four miniatures.
Step 7
If the folder does not display buttons or the address bar, open the folder, move the cursor to the menu bar and right-click on it. In the drop-down menu, set the marker opposite the item you need, the missing panels will appear.
