The Windows registry is a "place" that stores information about all programs installed on a computer, files, document associations, system settings, personal settings of computer users, and much more. In a physical sense, the registry is not stored in any specific location, it is built from many files stored in various system folders. The system registry is a very complex structure that you need to work with carefully.
Instructions
Step 1
There are at least three ways to enter the Windows system registry. The first of them consists in direct step-by-step transition to a specific part of the system menu, which is responsible for working with registry entries. To get there, you need to go to the following address: System drive C -> Windows folder -> System32 folder. In the folder that opens, you need to find a file called regedit.exe or regedit32.exe. After that, by double-clicking the left mouse button, open the specified file. A program window for editing the registry will open in front of you.
Step 2
The next way is to use the built-in Run menu, which is located in the Start bar. In order to start the registry editor go to the address: "Start" -> "All programs" -> "Accessories" -> "Run". After starting the program, a small window will open in front of you. In the line for entering text, type regedit and press the Enter key. After these steps, you will also see the application menu for editing the system registry.
Step 3
The main purpose of working with the registry is to clear it of unnecessary entries after uninstalling programs. It is quite difficult to carry out such operations manually, because the remaining records and keys are scattered across different branches. In order to simplify and automate the task, you can use programs that are alternative to the standard Windows registry editor. In addition to the usual functions of the registry editor, they have a whole set of utilities that allow you to automatically cope with various problems.
