By the file extension, you can almost always understand what data is stored in it: image, video, music, three-dimensional object. The same file can be opened in different applications, the main thing is that the program supports its format. But sometimes you need to change the file extension.
Instructions
Step 1
There are several ways to remake a file extension. Sometimes it's enough to just rename the file. Make sure to select the settings that display the file format, that is, there are a few more letters in the name after the period (Document.doc, Image.bmp).
Step 2
Open any folder saved on your computer. From the Tools menu, select Folder Options. In the new dialog box, go to the "View" tab and uncheck the item "Hide extensions for registered file types". Apply the new settings.
Step 3
Right-click on the file icon and select the "Rename" command from the context menu. The file name will be available for editing. Enter the one you need instead of the previous extension and press the Enter key or click anywhere on the screen with the left mouse button. This method is far from always suitable and not for all formats.
Step 4
Use a converter. This is a small application that allows you to change the file format without resorting to the program in which it was created. The interface of the converters may differ, but the principle of operation is the same: tell the program which file you want to change, select the format of the final file, wait for the operation to end.
Step 5
Another way involves using a program that supports the format in which your original file was saved. Run the application and open the file in the usual way. Select the "Save As" command from the "File" menu. When a new window opens, in the "File type" field, select a suitable extension from the list and click on the "Save" button.
Step 6
In some programs, it is possible to import and export files in specified formats. These commands are useful when the file cannot be modified using the Open and Save As commands. The principle of action is approximately the same as in the previous step. In the "File" menu, select the "Export" command, specify the required format in the "File type" field, click the "Export" button.
