VLC
For viewing MKV on a computer in Windows, Linux or Mac OS operating families, the multifunctional multi-platform VLC player is suitable. The program also exists for portable devices of the Android and iOS families, and you can download it directly from the Play Market and AppStore stores, respectively.
To install the program and configure it to play MKV, go to the official website of the application on the Internet using your browser. Once on the site, click the "Download VLC" button. On the next screen, select your operating system version and click the download link. Then run the file and install it according to the instructions on the screen.
Once the installation is complete, launch the program using the shortcut created on the desktop. Select the "File" - "Open" section and specify the path to the desired MKV file. You can also select video files to play in VLC by right clicking on the MKV movie and choosing Open With - VLC Player. K-Lite Codec Pack
Unlike VLC, K-Lite is a collection of libraries and programs that enable you to enable support for video and audio files in Windows. The necessary codecs are installed in the system and expand its multimedia capabilities for MKV playback by means of the system.
To install K-Lite, go to the official website of the program and download the codec pack. For MKV playback, the Basic package is suitable. Click on the Download button and download, then run the resulting file and complete the installation by selecting the desired settings.
After completing the procedure, the Windows Media Classic player will be installed in the system, which plays MKV by default. After installing the codec pack, you can also watch video files not only in Windows Media Classic, but also in any other player installed on the system. If, after installing the codec, MKV playback still fails, restart Windows to apply the settings made.
Alternative players include KMPlayer, GOM and Light Alloy. These programs can be suitable for different types of computers and are not particularly demanding on system resources, and therefore will be a good choice on computers with a relatively weak configuration.
