Computer networks are created for communication and collaboration, and the security system of the operating system is designed to protect against unauthorized access to the computer resources under its jurisdiction. How to instruct the security system to allow access to a specific folder from the outside is described in this article.

Instructions

Step 1

Windows security is organized at the level of individual files and is based on the use of the NTFS (New Technology File System) file system. All folders of each disk have special access control lists - ACL (Access Control List). They contain a list of specific users and user groups who are allowed access to a specific file or the entire folder as a whole. It also lists the actions that these users (or groups) can perform with folders and files. The operating system has the ability to both detailed and simplified ACL control. Therefore, how exactly to enable shared access to any folder depends on whether the option "Use simple file sharing" is enabled in the settings of your operating system. You can find out in the "Folder Options" dialog of the Control Panel. To open it, on the "Start" button in the "Settings" section, click "Control Panel", and then select the "Folder Options" item. In the window that opens, the option we are interested in is located on the "View" tab.

Step 2

To open (or vice versa - close) network access to any folder on your computer, right-click on it and select "Sharing and Security" in the menu that appears. If the "simple sharing" option is enabled (we found it out in the previous step), then in the folder properties window that opens, the "Access" tab will look like this:

Step 3

To allow access over the network, check the "Share this folder" checkbox. Here you can also specify the name under which the folder will be seen by other users of the folder, and also put a checkbox allowing network users to modify the files in the folder. Click "OK" for the changes to take effect.

Step 4

If the “simple sharing” option in the folder settings was disabled, then the “Access” tab in the folder properties window will look like this:

Folder properties. Option B

Step 5

Here, too, you can specify the folder name for network users, as well as the limitation is not the number of simultaneous connections. To allow network users to modify the files in the folder, click the "OK" button and check the box next to the "Change" item.
