Any optical disc, CD, DVD or Blu-ray, is a round disc with a transparent polycarbonate base. Further "filling" of the disc depends on its type, but all have this protective layer, on which scratches appear over time during use.

Instructions
Step 1
These scratches prevent the drive's laser beam from reading the data from the damaged location. The thickness of the protective layer CD - 1.2 mm, DVD - 0.6 mm, Blu-ray - 0.1 mm. If you are looking to recover a CD or DVD, lightly sanding its transparent surface can help. Take your disc, Colgate toothpaste, water, and a couple of tissues or soft towel. The toothpaste will act as a grinding tool, which will remove a thin top layer along with scratches (if they are not very deep).
Step 2
Gently apply the paste to the clear surface of the disc. Spread it all over the disc with your fingers or tissue. Leave to dry for a while - a few minutes will suffice. Rinse the disc under running water or in a prepared bowl. Rinse off all of the paste to make sure no residue remains. Dry the disc with paper towels or a towel. From the middle of the disc, gently wipe all ends carefully so as not to damage the surface, and also completely remove all water.
Step 3
Check the disk for readability on your computer. If recovery does not help, try the procedure again, but do not forget about the thickness of the protective layer depending on the type of disc. As practice shows, almost 90 percent of scratched discs are restored for some time using this method. As soon as the computer reads the contents of the media, transfer everything to a portable device or to local drives on the computer.
Step 4
If the scratches on the disc are very light, wipe the entire surface with a swab or tissue moistened with alcohol. This procedure will not remove scratches, but it can wash away dirt from the disc, which will improve laser access to the reflective layer.
