To connect a computer to the Internet via cable lines, it is often necessary to use a network controller. Also, an Ethernet controller is required to connect to some types of wireless networks. It's not about connecting the device to the motherboard, but about turning it on in the system itself.

It is necessary

  • - Computer with Windows OS;
  • - driver for the network controller.

Instructions

Step 1

The first step is to make sure your network controller is detected by your operating system. It can be done like this. Right-click on the My Computer icon. Then click on "Properties" in the context menu. If your operating system is Windows XP, then go first to the "Hardware" tab and there already select "Device Manager". For Windows 7, you can immediately select Device Manager.

Step 2

After that, a list of devices that are connected to your computer will appear. Find “Ethernet Controller” in this list. There should be a question mark next to it. This means that the device is in the system, but the driver is not installed for it.

Step 3

Now you need to install a driver for this device. It must be included in the package with the motherboard and the word Ethernet must be present in its name. Install the drivers from the disk.

Step 4

If for some reason you do not have a disk with drivers for the motherboard, then you can go to the manufacturer's website and find them for your network controller there. Download drivers. Unpack the archive to any folder. Run the executable (Exe) file. Using the "Installation Wizard", install the driver on your computer. Reboot your PC.

Step 5

After rebooting, go to Device Manager again. Now, instead of a question mark, the network controller model will be written. This means that the device is completely ready for use.

Step 6

At the bottom of the taskbar, on the right side, you should have an icon that displays network activity. When you connect a network cable to the controller and access the Internet, this will be displayed on the icon. Also, in some cases, you can see the speed of the network. If the network cable is missing, then by hovering the mouse cursor over the icon, you will receive a notification that it is not connected.
