Step 1
Connect the hard drive to a separate power supply unit and perform its initial diagnostics. When you turn on the power for about seven seconds, you should hear a sound characteristic of unwinding the spindle device, then a click should follow, which indicates that the head is moving out of the parking spot. After that, you should hear a characteristic crackle, which will tell you that the recalibration process is currently underway.
Step 2
Listen. If you hear intermittent knocking when turning on the power of the hard drive, it means that the drive cannot read information from the surface of the drives. So you need to fix the screw. Such knocking can be triggered by faults in the HDA or some kind of breakdown in the electronics board.
Step 3
To fix a screw, install a good electronics board on the screw from a hard drive of the same model that uses the same firmware version. If, as a result of these actions, the knocking stopped, but the hard drive did not work, then continue to look for a malfunction. It can be in the HDA switch.
Step 4
Check how well the spindle motor control IC is soldered. If necessary, re-solder it. There could be such a situation that as a result of prolonged overheating, this microcircuit failed. In this case, to repair the hard drive, replace it with a serviceable one. Sometimes during such a check, the power supply unit may also fail. This indicates that a breakdown of the protective diode of the 12-volt circuit occurred in the hard drive.
Step 5
Ring this circuit with a tester. You can remove the diode and use the hard drive again, but in this case, its reliable operation cannot be guaranteed. Replace the diode with a new one. First of all, when repairing a screw at home, try not to make it worse than it was. If you are not confident in your own abilities, it is better to immediately take the screw to a service center.
