Each frame of digital video played on personal computers, like any digital picture, takes up a fairly large amount of memory. In order to make it possible to store video on modern media, it is compressed using special algorithms. Video recording equipment, video capture programs and video game recording can create unpacked videos that take up very large volumes. Instructions
Step 1
Open the video file in the VirtualDub editor. To do this, press the key combination Ctrl + O, or use the main application menu by selecting the "File" and "Open video file …" items. The "Open video file" dialog will be displayed. Specify the path to the required directory in it. Highlight a video file in the list. Click the "Open" button. Alternatively, drag and drop the file into the VirtualDub window from Explorer or File Manager.
Step 2
Set the full video stream processing mode. In the main menu, click on the "Video" item, and then check the box on the "Full processing mode" item.

Activate the full audio stream processing mode. Select the "Audio" item in the menu and check the "Full processing mode" item.

Select and configure an encoder for the video stream. Press the key combination Ctrl + P, or click on the items "Video" and "Compression …" of the main menu. In the list of the "Select video compression" dialog, select your preferred codec. Click the "Configure" button. The dialog for setting the parameters of the encoder will open. Set the compression quality, data rate, keyframe rate. Click the "OK" button in both dialogs.
Step 5
Select and configure an encoder for the audio stream. Use the "Audio" and "Compression …" items of the main menu to display the "Select audio compression" dialog. On the left side of this dialog is a list of audio encoders. Highlight your preferred codec. The list on the right displays a list of data compression modes supported by the codec. Choose one of them. Click the "OK" button.
Step 6
Compress the video. Press the F7 key, or select the "File" and "Save as AVI …" items from the menu. Specify the directory to save the file and its name. Click the "Save" button. The process of compressing the video and recording it to the specified file will begin. The progress of the process with the output of statistical information will be displayed in the "VirtuaDub Status" dialog. Wait for the file save operation to complete.
