Linux history

Finnish student Linus Torvalds, born in 1969, began to create his own operating system, the prototype of which was the Minix operating system. On August 25, 1991, Torvalds posted his first post about a system he was developing to the comp.os.minix newsgroup. In a message, Torvalds writes that he is creating a new free OS. He needs the opinion of users about the advantages and disadvantages of the Minix OS, tk. his OS is very similar to it, and he would like to take into account all the wishes of possible users. He notes that he sees this occupation as a hobby, and not as something grandiose and professional. Of course, then he could not even imagine that Linux would gain worldwide fame among programmers and web developers.

In February 1992, Torvalds wanted to know how many people had already tested his OS and asked all users to send him a postcard. He received several hundred postcards from all over the world. This means that Linux was already rapidly gaining popularity.

For a very long time, Linus Torvalds did not want to sell his development, and indeed to take at least some money for its distribution. He clearly spoke about this in copyright. But later he had to revise the copyright and make some amendments to it so that he could cover the cost of the Linux floppy disks.

Differences between Linux and Windows

First of all, Linux users practically do not encounter viruses, do not install antiviruses and do not carry out a regular fight against them, as Windows users do. The structure of the operating system itself excludes the possibility of virus programs functioning. This OS is very reliable. Its users assure that the PC can work without freezes and reboots for years.

In addition, Linux is officially free and available to all users. This is a very significant plus, because free (pirated) version of Windows may not work correctly and cause great harm to your computer. Using Linux is fairly straightforward, but you should read all questions and instructions carefully. Whereas in Windows it is enough to select "OK" or "Cancel" when responding to prompts, then Linux provides several different options for action. After installing Linux, the user can use thousands of free and completely functional programs.

Open source Linux allows users to fix bugs at their own discretion, adjust the system for themselves, and add various programs. Consequently, the Linux OS is very reliable, free and flexible to use, but, perhaps, only the most advanced users can use all its advantages.
