An external dvd drive may be needed by those using netbooks, most of which don't come with floppy drives. The models of these devices vary greatly. Some can only read DVDs, others can also burn them, and still others can even burn Blu-ray.

Step 1
The most inexpensive drives look much the same as internal desktop drives: they are bulky and angular. Cheap models often need extra power. More expensive devices have a stylish design, they are miniature, and one or two USB connectors are enough for them to work properly. If your budget is limited, and you will only use such a drive at home, you can purchase one of the cheapest models. Travel requires a miniature device. Since it is usually difficult to find an outlet in "field" conditions, it makes sense to pay attention to models that do not need separate power supply.

If the absence of a cable is important to you, then do not seek to purchase a model with high speed characteristics. Firstly, the lower the write speed of the disc, the better the process. Secondly, drives running at slow speeds consume less power and produce little noise.

DVD drives can be read-only, read-write, or even work with Blu-ray discs. Today it is difficult to find a device that does not have a recording function, but still there are such devices. Blu-ray drives are the most expensive ones. They are also different. Some can only write single-layer discs, the volume of which is 23 GB, while others write double-layer discs, which can hold 46 GB of data. As a rule, such drives are supplied with the software necessary for reading and writing, since the operating systems of the Windows family, most often encountered by users, do not have standard tools for this.
Step 4
Most dvd drives plug into a USB port. It must be version 2.0 or higher. Many high-speed drives require two USB ports to connect at once, as this is the only way to get sufficient power. Check if your netbook has two USB ports side by side so you can plug in the drive without additional cables.
